MWR DAYTONA 500 RACE REPORT

RESULTS

7th        Clint Bowyer

26th      Michael Waltrip

Clint Bowyer Race Summary: No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota driver Clint Bowyer finished seventh in Sunday’s 57th running of the Daytona 500. The Michael Waltrip Racing driver started ninth and cautiously raced at the back of the field in the early going. When he decided to go forward the 5-hour Toyota moved to seventh by the halfway mark. He raced in third with 35 laps to go, fourth with 20 to go and fifth with 10 to go. The race saw the 43-car field race three and sometimes four abreast several rows deep throughout the 200-lap race. Bowyer started fourth for the green-white-checkered, shot out to second behind leader Joey Logano coming to the white flag but lost momentum as drafting partners Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. pulled to the outside lane. Bowyer then survived a wild door banging finish at the checkered flag. The 5-hour ENERGY team returns to action Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

  • Started ninth and finished seventh
  • Seventh at halfway mark, restarted third with 35 to go and fifth with 10 to go
  • Started green-white-checkered in fourth
  • Returns to action Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

BOWYER:  “The 5-hour ENERGY Toyota had a good day. Just disappointed on the green-white checkered. I don’t know what I could have done different (on green-white-checkered finish.) I have to go back and look at it. Just you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t there. I had them stacked up – some pretty good cars there behind me and I knew they were going to shuffle me out. I was kind of the lone wolf in the whole group other than the 22 (Joey Logano) and he happened to be leading. Once they got me in the middle, three-wide, I was stuck and screwed.”

Michael Waltrip Summary: No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota driver Michael Waltrip finished 26th in Sunday’s 57th running of the Daytona 500. The two-time race champion started 34th and charged to the front in the early going climbing to 14th on lap 40. The No. 55 suffered front-end damage on lap 41 as cars took action to avoid Tony Stewart when he hit the wall. Waltrip dropped to 39th as the crew made repairs. The damage proved too much and Waltrip fell a lap down on lap 83. With few cautions, Waltrip had little opportunity to regain the lost lap until 25 to go when he earned the free pass. He restarted the race in 35th and moved to 29th for the green-white-checkered finish. Waltrip dodged a last lap accident to finish 26th. The Aaron’s Dream Machine returns to action Sunday with Brett Moffitt behind the wheel of the No. 55 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Brian Vickers takes over fulltime at Las Vegas on March 8.

  • Started 34th and finished 26th
  • Climbed to 14th by lap 40
  • Suffered front-end damage avoiding other cars in Lap 41 accident
  • Lost lap on lap 83 then regained it with 25 laps to go
  • Race marked Waltrip’s 28th Daytona 500

WALTRIP: “We had a good car today and I would love to have been able to race it all day. We just got caught up in a wreck. My guys did a great job getting the Aaron's Dream Machine fixed but it took us a long time to get the lap back. I feel honored I just had the opportunity to race today and want to thank both Aaron’s and Toyota for their support. You can’t ever take running in the Daytona 500 for granted. I’m very lucky to get to be part of this event and enjoyed every moment.”
