MWR DAYTONA KNOCKOUT QUALIFYING REPORT

Michael Waltrip

  • Qualified 22nd
  • Starts 10th in second 150-mile Duel on Thursday.
  • His lap in first session was the eighth best time of any driver throughout all rounds.

Clint Bowyer

  • Bowyer’s qualifying run ended when he was collected in a multi-car crash early in the first session.
  • Qualified 41st
  • Earned 20th starting spot in first 150-mile Duel on Thursday
  • Will go to back of the field in the Duel because of a switch to backup car.

NOTES:

  • Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson qualified first and second and will start there for the Daytona 500.
  • Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch rounded out the top-five qualifiers.
  • Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s times were later disallowed after inspection.
  • Bowyer will use a backup car in Thursday’s 150-mile qualifying race – this car – No. 811 - finished third at Talladega in October and ninth at Daytona in July.
  • 49 drivers made a qualifying attempt.
  • Thursday’s two 150-mile Duel races determine a majority of the starting lineup.
  • Fox Sports 1 will carry the Duels at 7 p.m. ET Thursday.
  • See below for explanation of Daytona qualifying.

Michael Waltrip, No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota: “I am really happy with the No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota. The team put together a great car for me. I love the way it drove in practice on Saturday and it handled amazing in the draft today during qualifying. It had a lot of good speed. Those are the things you need to win Daytona. You have to have a good handling car and a fast car. I think that we have just that so we will probably go into Thursday a little on the conservative side. We have a pretty good time from qualifying so we should be okay. I want to race this car in the 500, so I will probably lay back a little during the 150’s. Will probably try to mix it up a little at the end. Not a lot of stress now with that great lap time. I also know that I have a really fast car in the draft so I am really confident going into Thursday. I have been able to win on Thursday before so maybe I can do it again.”

Clint Bowyer, No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota: “That’s not what we wanted and it’s unfortunate. This 5-hour ENERGY team has worked hard and our Toyotas have been running strong. We’ve got a good back-up car. We’ll get her tuned up and be ready for the Duels.”

HOW THE FIELD QUALIFIES FOR THE DAYTONA 500

Positions 1-2

  • Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson will start the Daytona 500 on the front row.

Positions 3-32

  • The top 15 finishers from each of Thursday’s 150-mile races will fill these slots.
    • Top 15 from Race 1 will fill the inside row.
    • Top 15 from Race 2 will fill the outside row.

Positions 33-36

  • Assigned to vehicles with the fastest single lap speed in any of Sunday’s qualifying rounds that have not already earned a starting position.

The Champion’s Provisional starting position is defined as the starting position assigned to the entry whose driver is the current or a former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion, who participated as a driver in the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and who was entered in the Event for that car owner in that vehicle by the entry deadline and is otherwise eligible for the position.
