OrthoCarolina Motorsports provides medical care for teams year-round

CORNELIUS, N.C. (February 5, 2015) – OrthoCarolina, the most comprehensive orthopedic practice in the region, has formalized an agreement to provide medical services for Michael Waltrip Racing, a premiere NASCAR Sprint Cup team co-owned by two-time Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip and Rob Kauffman.

“With the rapid evolution of motorsports technology, the physical demand on pit crews and drivers has increased significantly. As teams have become more specialized, healthcare and human performance have become critical components of racing,” said Dr. Dan Murrey, CEO of OrthoCarolina. “Medical care, injury prevention and athletic conditioning both on and off the track have become as important as the races themselves.”

With OrthoCarolina’s Concord office serving as a base, the OrthoCarolina Motorsports service line provides care in race shops during the week and trackside at races during the NASCAR season, including chronic, acute and major injuries, athletic training and physical therapy services, and specialist and primary care referrals. Serving as physician lead is sports medicine surgeon Patrick Connor, also team physician to Joe Gibbs Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte Knights. OrthoCarolina Motorsports day-to-day operations are run by physician assistant Bill Heisel, who launched the program nearly eight years ago. In its entirety OrthoCarolina Motorsports oversees medical care for NASCAR pit crews, drivers, team employees and officials as well as many of their family members.

“The NASCAR season is the longest in all of sports and 38 racing weekends can take a toll on all of our employees. To maintain peak performance all season long, especially for our over-the-wall athletes, it is critical to have proper recovery and preventative care, as well as access to quick, efficient medical treatment,” said Michael Waltrip, founder of Michael Waltrip Racing. “OrthoCarolina Motorsports and Bill Heisel have provided MWR the perfect solution.  They are respected and reputable, and most importantly they are trusted by our employees, which is what everyone needs when it comes to personalized care.”

OrthoCarolina Motorsports also has formal relationships with Joe Gibbs Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, Stewart Haas Racing, Roush Fenway Racing and Richard Petty Motorsports.
